Identify the client: The definition of client as defined in our textbook is, â€Å"One who has either sought help from a social worker or is served by an agency employing a social worker. † Therefore, in this case study I would consider both Frank and Angela Bertollini to be the clients. 2. Eco-map: 3. Field of Practice Knowledge: * Depression: One thing that I learned from this article is the phases that amputees experience for up to ten years post surgery. Depression occurs usually in the post-amputation period and it is common to last for about two years. It tends to decrease in time, but may linger for up to ten years. Mr. Bertollini shows signs of depression when he commented that â€Å"at times it might have been better if he had been killed in the accident than to left only half a man. † He is also using alcohol to cope and withdrawing from normal activities that he once enjoyed. Mr. Bertollini is displaying this anxiety when he speaks to the social worker about his wife turning away and not looking at his amputated leg. He also said that he feels like he was the strong one and now he’s not. * Older Amputees: One aspect with older amputees is that they are limited in their ability to participate in sports or other social activities and this can create feelings of isolation. One reason for this is lack of body strength and problems with balance. Once he returned home from the hospital he no longer sees he his friends because he can no longer participate in these activities. Also, he can no longer drive, nor has his wife ever been able to drive so they are limited in socializing with friends. 4.Engagement: The definition textbook defines engagement as, â€Å"The establishment of a helping relationship between the worker and the client system. † * At the first interview I will engage Mr. and Mrs. Bertollini with open-ended questions in order to give them both an opportunity to talk. I will also show concern and empathy with non-verbal body language such as leaning forward in my chair and making eye contact when they talk. * I will give both Mr. and Mrs. Bertolllin equal opportunities to speak and share their needs and concerns.I will also give each of them time alone to share their feelings and anxieties. * I will recognize each of them as individuals with unique needs and concerns. I will allow them both to freely express both positive and negative feelings without being judgmental. I will be sensitive to their feelings, try to understand the meaning and purpose of what they are staying and respond appropriately. 5. Assessment Phase: The textbook defines assessment as, â€Å"Ongoing process of the social work endeavor that develops an understanding of person in situation to use as the basis for action. † a.
